OMG LOVING this weather lately! JK. I’m still living in Ohio and want to die. We literally had whiteout conditions yesterday afternoon. Maybe I’m misremembering, but I don’t recall winter lasting this long in previous years. Luckily, I am going to LA next week for a nice, long trip in the sun. And when I return, it shall be summer!
So anyways, here’s some music I’ve been into the past month.
Vacationer – Magnetism
What initially drew me to this song is the fact that it sounds remarkably like this old Nintendo Wii music. It’s also good on it’s own though, and now I’m totally getting into Vacationer’s older stuff. Sorry if I ruined it for you with the whole Wii Shop thing.
Sunflower Bean – Twentytwo
This song is GLORIOUSLY 90’s. They kind of remind me of The Cranberries, sans Irish yodeling. I love that the lead singer, Julia Cumming, is wearing a sequin bikini top and playing guitar (#goals, truly). Her voice is just incredible.
Lindstrøm ft. Ronika – Didn’t Know Better
I’ve been getting into Norwegian producer Lindstrøm lately. This song is a JAM. I even made my grandma listen to it. Disco lives on. Put this one on your workout playlist.
Lawrence Arabia – Solitary Guys
Sorry if this sad sack song gives you whiplash after that last scorcher. What you need to understand is this: I walk around in the rain a lot and listen to music. So, naturally, I’m drawn to songs that match that vibe. Wait for the chorus.
Her’s – I’ll Try
I have been VERY into Her’s lately. Her’s describes themselves as an “international supersonic spectral wave Liverpool band”, but I think they sound pleasantly dreamy. They’re great and super underrated. Get ahead of the crowd on this one before Urban Outfitters starts sponsoring them.
Charlotte Gainsbourg – Deadly Valentine
Love this creepy disco jam from creepy French lady Charlotte Gainsbourg. According to Gainsbourg, all love stories end in death. Which is technically true, I guess.
La Dame Blanche – Yo Quiero Trabajar
I’ve learned enough Spanish to know that the title of this song is “I Want to Work”. Thanks, DuoLingo! Seriously though, La Dame Blanche is a bad bitch. That crazy flute intro on this song? That’s her. She’s a classically trained flutist as well as a dancehall singer and percussionist.
Japanese Breakfast – Diving Woman
I love long, extremely repetitive songs that you can just kind of vibe out and transcend to (best example of what I mean). This song has a 60’s vibe and reminds me a bit of Madonna’s “Beautiful Stranger”. Japanese Breakfast is the solo project of Little Big League’s Michelle Zauner. “Diving Woman” is the opening track of her second album (released in 2017). I haven’t listened to the whole thing yet, but based on the fact that there’s a song called “Jimmy Fallon Big!”, I think I’m going to like it.
Charlie Puth – Done for Me (ft. Kehlani)
Well I was going to start this off by bitching about Charlie Puth’s shaved eyebrow, but apparently it’s a real scar from a “near fatal dog-bit incident”. I apologize in advance. ANYWAYS, his newer music is what one would hope Justin Timberlake would be doing these days. You know, insanely catchy pop music instead of warm garbage. Of course, his previous release (Nine Track Mind) was also pretty bad, but I am hoping his recent singles are a sign that something dope is on the way.
Leon Bridges – Bad Bad News
I’m excited about this slightly more dance-y direction Leon Bridges is going in. Loving his moves. Excited for his new LP!
The Shacks – Birds
Wow, so disturbed to find out that “This Strange Effect” (ya know, The Shacks song in an iPhone commercial) is actually a cover. Well, anyways, I think The Shacks may have more to offer us than just a soundtrack for iPhone commercials. You know I love me some 60’s revival. I haven’t listened to this full album yet, but I will report back when I do.
My mom says my musical taste is AWESOME, so if you need more, here’s the whole playlist:
If you like these posts, follow me on Spotify! I make a new playlist every month, and I also make random and specific mixes like “Aggressively Pregaming” (when you’re mad but also need to get ready to go out) and “Standard Party Playlist” (a playlist you can put on at literally any party and it will be lit).
