I usually like to post my monthly music picks at the beginning of the month. However, I haven’t been very active on my blog or social media lately because a) I’ve been focusing my energies on my freelance writing career and b) I had an inner ear infection which left me unable to do, well, anything for a week or two. But I’M BACK, BABY! LET’S ROCK.
I didn’t see any shows in July, but I did go to an event called Daft Brunch at The Resident in DTLA. Basically, they just played Daft Punk and other French disco favorites all day while we sipped “Daft Punch” and danced. It was so much fun. I was in bed by 8pm, naturally.
Calvin Harris – Feels
I can’t stand Pharrell or Katy Perry, and yet here we are (I do like Calvin Harris though and he can call me anytime he wants). This is just such a catchy summer song, dude. I literally can’t help myself. Also, it doesn’t hurt that this song reminds me of “Never Give Up On the Good Times” by the Spice Girls.
Washed Out – Burn Out Blues
When will I stop raving about Washed Out’s latest album? PROBABLY WHEN I DIE. I can’t get over it.
Barry White – Never Never Gonna Give Ya Up
Did you people see Baby Driver yet? If not, you better check yourself before you wreck yourself. Baby Driver was one of the best things that happened to me in 2017, honestly. The soundtrack is great, and influenced a lot of my picks for this month. I’m glad that they featured this song, because Burger King came thisclose to ruining this song for me FOREVER. Just wait until he gets to the chorus. I promise it’s worth it.
Simon & Garfunkel – Baby Driver
Another pick from the Baby Driver soundtrack! You know I love Paul Simon. In fact, he’s the whole reason I started this blog eight years ago.
The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion – Bellbottoms
You know what? I’m just going to go ahead and grab the opening scene from this movie to convince you that you need to see Baby Driver ASAP. Also, this song is AMAZING to sprint to.
The 1975 – Somebody Else
I’ve never seen anyone look so depressed while skateboarding in my life. This video is pretty stupid, but I really like the song (and you probably will too).
Daft Punk – Something About Us
Why the F did no one ever tell me that there’s an entire anime movie that goes along with Daft Punk’s Discovery? I feel like everything I know has been a lie. I need to go watch this whole thing now (as soon as I finish writing this post), but I will report back with my findings.
Whitney – You’ve Got a Woman
I love doing these posts because I always learn new things when I look up these bands. For instance, the band members of Whitney were once in Smith Westerns and Unknown Mortal Orchestra. Oh, and they’re album was produced by a member of Foxygen. If you like Neil Young, I think you’d really like this band.
BONUS: Da Brat ft. Tyrese – What’chu Like
You know, there truly are not enough songs with female rappers and dudes singing the hooks. It’s always the other way around, right? Eighteen years on, this song still sounds sick as hell.
Here’s the whole playlist on Spotify:
If you like these posts, follow me on Spotify! I make a new playlist every month, and I also make random and specific mixes like “Aggressively Pregaming” (when you’re mad but also need to get ready to go out) and “Standard Party Playlist” (a playlist you can put on at literally any party and it will be lit).
