June flew by with astonishing speed, did it not? Didn’t I just do this post for June?! Anyways, June was a really great month for me, music-wise. I saw so much incredible live music this month. I saw Moon Honey at the Echoplex, Portugal the Man in Columbus, Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds in Cleveland, my uncle’s band, AND Animal Collective in Santa Ana. On a Tinder date. No kidding.
I’m also feeling super inspired and I want to start writing music and recording again. Stay tuned for that, but if you want to hear my music from my last creative explosion, you can find my Soundcloud here.
Washed Out – Get Lost
Last week Carolyn and I went to Washed Out’s debut of his new visual album held at the Vista Theatre. It was the dopest thing ever. I’m going to do an album/event review shortly. But if you’ve never heard of Washed Out, he’s a “chillwave” musician from Georgia who just writes like the most relaxing music. Think Tame Impala, but even more chill.
Childish Gambino – Redbone
I thought I was so clever and discovered this song, then I went to Ohio and they were playing it on the Top 40 pop station in Youngstown. So, maybe I’m not as cool as I think I am. But when it’s on the radio they cut out THE VERY BEST PART, which is the guitar solo at the end. If you’ve never heard the full album version, skip ahead to 3:33 and revel in the glory of the outro to this song.
Jidenna – Bambi
This song is SUCH an ear worm. The first time I heard it, I kept expecting someone to come in rapping. This whole song sounds like a sample. He kind of has a Sam Cooke vibe that I really dig. Also, I had no idea this guy had red hair until I watched this hair. Gingers unite!
The xx – On Hold
I find the xx kind of depressing, but I do like this song because of the Hall & Oates sample. I guess that’s just what kind of white person I am. I respect the girl for getting out of this situation, because I believe you should stay far away from men who call you “woman” to your face. Ugh. I would barf.
Ice Cube – Check Yo Self
Shout out to my favorite LA radio station, 93.5 KDAY! If it wasn’t for them, I would have never learned that I love driving around with the windows down in the sunshine and listening to Ice Cube. It’s the little things, right?
Papa Ya – Sunny
I hope this video is supposed to be a joke. If it’s not, it’s really lame/sad. I think it might not be a joke though. What are your thoughts? Cool song though.
Wc and the Maad Circle – West Up!
Perhaps you’re sensing a theme here with the West Coast Rap. What can I say? I really like listening to KDAY.
Technology + Teamwork – K + B
Godddddd this song is so sick. It starts out so low key and really builds. This would be a great song for your indie boning mix (should you have one of those – I do!). However, this is another case of a great song with a terrible video. I just don’t get it.

I make a new playlist every month, and I also make random and specific mixes like “Aggressively Pregaming” (when you’re mad but also need to get ready to go out) and “Standard Party Playlist” (a playlist you can put on at literally any party and it will be lit).
