Next up on our visit to China we visited the Shanghai French Concession. The French Concession is where all the French people used to live in Shanghai, so the food and architecture of the neighborhood definitely has a bit of a European flavor. Shops selling fruit, grilled meat, and French pastries fill the tree-lined streets. We ordered what we THOUGHT were chocolate pastries. Unfortunately, they were filled with what I believe was fig? The filling had the same weird texture as a Fig Newton. It wasn’t necessarily gross, it’s just not what we were expecting at all. When I want chocolate, I want CHOCOLATE!
Whoa, sorry. I got a little out of hand there. I just don’t take pastry betrayal well.
ANYWAYS…We also bought more steamed buns. The woman in front of me ordered a green one, and I couldn’t fathom what it was made of so obviously I ordered one too! It was revolting. It was probably the weirdest thing I’ve ever eaten. I’m pretty sure it was filled with MORE FIG! But why was it green? We just don’t know!
We also ate lunch at a Spanish restaurant and ordered coffee from a three-story Starbucks. Sadly, we had to wrap up our adventures early and head to airport to catch our flight to Beijing. Apparently, there are two airports in Shanghai and we were THIS CLOSE to going to the wrong one. My, what a disaster that would have been, I said. Can you imagine missing your flight in Shanghai? Little did I know that I would be having that exact problem not 7 days later.
Alleyway shopping is one of the highlights of the Shanghai French Concession.
I was quite tempted to purchase this “doge” mask, for obvious reasons.
Can you even believe these adorable miniature food magnets?
Here’s a video of me eating that weird green thing, taken by @electricshelbyshocks.
If you’re wondering why this video is round, Shelby purchased Snapchat Spectacles for our trip. The videos look great in the Snapchat app, but unfortunately they export all weird. Still, Spectacles are great for capturing vacations. I just find it sort of strange to see the world from Shelby’s perspective. I never realized how much time she spends looking at the top of my head.
