I think you guys already know this, but I’m obsessed with the song “Groove in the Heart” by Deee-Lite. When I was a kid, I was both attracted to and repulsed by this video. I loved all the crazy colors, but I think that the lead singer, Lady Miss Kier, just kind of freaked me out.
Now I love her.
I love the fashion in this music video because it represents such a great intersection of 60’s mod, 70’s disco, and 90’s rave cultures. It’s so out of control and out there, that it doesn’t really seem to fall into a time period. This video is apparently from 1991, however, in case you were wondering. But I feel that it’s TIMELESS!
Here’s the most iconic fashion moments from Deee-Lite’s “Groove is in the Heart” video…
(Also, please excuse the image quality. I was just screencapping from YouTube. I did my best!)
I love that they felt the need to include a fake fur disclaimer in the very first frame of the video. Here, we are seeing a yellow (fake) fur jacket with matching velour shorts and boots. FANTASTIC.
Everyone’s outfits in this dance scene are so important.
DJ matching his turtleneck to his booth? Check!
Hot pink polyester romper with a disco collar and matching shoes? Check!
Star sunglasses and a rhinestone tie? CHECK! We’ve got it all here, people.
Have you ever seen anything as magical as this harlequin jumpsuit?
We got a lot of polyester floral going on this shot…
People, this man is wearing YELLOW POLYESTER PANTS.
You can’t tell from this screenshot, but the man in the front in the yellow and orange shirt is wearing a matching crocheted bucket hat.
Girl work that headband!
Are you a fan of disembodied heads? Then you’ll love this video!
Honestly, I am almost inspired to get acrylics and start wearing chunky rings after watching this.
Just another shot of this guy because he is DOPE.
