In June I got to spend a week and a half in my home state of Ohio and it was glorious! I hadn’t been to Ohio for six months. I hadn’t seen my mom, sister, or dog since the day after Christmas (I did see my dad for a minute when he had a layover in LA on the way home from China). That’s WAY TOO LONG! Obviously I love LA and all, but most of my family and friends live in Ohio so it was so epic to spend quality time with them. And the best part was, since I no longer work in a traditional office job, I got to extend my 4-day trip to 11 days! I may be poor now that I’m freelancing, but at least I now have the flexibility with my time to see the people I care about most in this world.
I think that Ohio gets a bad rap. People are always like “What is there to do in Ohio?” Yeah, it’s not California. But Ohio is beautiful in its own way, especially in the summer. It’s so GREEN! I literally forgot how green it is there. Anyways, here’s a few fun things I did while I was in Ohio that I would recommend to anyone traveling through the area.
White House Fruit Farm in Canfield, Ohio
I have always loved going to this place since I was a kid. White House Fruit Farm is a combination of orchard, specialty grocery store, and playground. You can walk around the grounds, pick your own fruit, feed fish, and play fetch with the dog that lives there. In the fall there’s a pumpkin patch, hay rides, and corn mazes. Check out their website here.
The White Turkey in Conneaut, Ohio
The White Turkey is a drive-in in Conneaut, Ohio which is located on the shores of Lake Erie. The White Turkey specializes in amazing shredded turkey sandwiches and fresh root beer. You’ve never tasted root beer until you’ve had it here, people. It’s only open between Mother’s Day and Labor Day, so visiting is a special summer treat.
Lake Erie in Conneaut, Ohio
After our trip to The White Turkey, my family and I decided to walk off some of the calories on the beach at Lake Erie. The water is so nice and calm there, especially compared to the roaring Pacific Ocean. The beaches are a combination of sand and stone, and the water is refreshing and cool compared to the hot Ohio summer weather.
Harvest Pizzeria in Columbus, Ohio
Sorry, LA, but you have yet to show me a pizza place as good as Harvest. I pretty much ate 2 pizzas alone that night, and I don’t care who knows it because they are SO GOOD. In the summer they have a lovely patio so you can enjoy those hot Ohio summer nights while you stuff yourself.
Dirty Franks in Columbus, Ohio
Dirty Franks in downtown Columbus has like 60 different hot dogs and an endless array of ingredients to create your own. I believe this is the West Virginian (chili + cole slaw + onion) and the deluxe tater tots. Totally bad for you, totally delicious.
I think it goes without saying that I gained like 7 pounds in Ohio.
Here’s a few added scenes of fields, trees, and blue sky as far as the eye can see:
It’s really quite beautiful, and so different from the palm trees and endless urban sprawl that I’m used to in LA.
