Jayne Mansfield was an outrageously curvy actress and blonde bombshell in the 50’s and 60’s. Apparently she was some kind of design genius as well, decorating her Los Angeles mansion in all things PINK. Her “Pink Palace” included a pink fur bathroom with a pink heart-shaped bathtub, a fountain of pink champagne, and a heart-shaped pool with “I love Jayne” in gold leaf lettering on the bottom (a gift from her husband).
The Pink Palace was built in 1929 and designed by architect G.C McAllister. The 10,000 square foot house was made up of 30 rooms, including 7 bedrooms, 8 bathrooms, a dining room, bar, library, and wine cellar.
Mansfield decorated her palace on a budget by requesting free samples from furniture and building suppliers in exchange for the notoriety of having their products in her house. She received over $150,000 in free merchandise – which is $1,263,803 in 2016 dollars!
Other owners of the Pink Palace include Ringo Starr, Mamma Cass Elliott, and Engelbert Humperdink. It was demolished in 2002, which is truly a shame.
I’m not sure that a pink furry bathroom is hygienic, but it’s certainly fabulous!
If a man won’t build you a heart-shaped pool, does he really love you?
I like how this room required a polar bear rug, as if the wall to wall shag carpeting wasn’t enough.
Like a padded cell, but in red vinyl! What a perfect working environment! Also I like how the “work” Jayne was doing in her office was making a scrapbook of press clippings about herself.
Nothing says family fun time like a gold metallic ceiling and pink satin curtains.
I weep for the cleaning lady who had to shampoo the pink shag carpeting around the bath tub.
The perfect balcony from which to drunkenly serenade your husband as he scatters pillows across the floor.
House goals: a gallery wall of all my magazine covers.
I’m pretty sure that baby is Mariska Hargitay of Law and Order: SVU fame.
You would think I’d comment on the black satin sheets, but the thing I find most out of control about this room is that ridiculous eight light wall sconce above the bed.
So many dogs!!! How do they keep the dog hair out of the shag carpet? So many questions.
If you’re not wearing black tie on a Sunday afternoon, what are you doing with your life?
I wonder if this is the room where George Harrison told Ringo Starr he’d been sleeping with his wife?
I actually think that pink is a great exterior color for homes, at least in Southern California.
