MONTHLY MUSIC PICKS – SEPTEMBER 2015

October 7, 2015 • 14 Comments

I can’t believe it’s been like 4 months since I did a monthly music pick post. I guess it’s more like trimester music picks? Like, now that I’m reading that post, I hadn’t even left my old job and Ohio yet. That literally feels like a lifetime ago.

Anyways…these songs are kind of recapping the music I’ve been listening to a lot since moving to LA. I am spending a lot of time in my car (obviously) listening to Top 40, 80’s pop, and old school hip hop. Try to have an open mind and let’s party!

Sheryl Crow – All I Wanna Do

I brought this CD in my car specifically to listen to this song as my mom and I drove into LA. This is also a great song to put on jukeboxes. It just makes everyone happy! Except my room mate. She hates Sheryl Crow for some reason lmfao.

The Weeknd – Can’t Feel My Face

This was like basically the song of the summer, right? The best part is in the chorus when the back up vocals come in like “I can’t feel my faaaaaaaace when I’m with youuuuuuuuuu.”

The Beach Boys – Girls on the Beach

Obviously I’ve been listening to the Beach Boys a lot because they’re pretty much the most California band ever. I had one great snap of my sister sitting on Venice Beach eating fruit with “Girls on the Beach” playing in the background. I kind of wish I saved it. It was just a great vibe. How ridiculous is this video, btw? It reminds me of that 80’s beach babe aesthetic we talked about…

2Pac – To Live and Die in LA

AHHHHHHH YASSSSSS! I actually never heard this song before I moved here? And they pretty much play it on the radio every day here. It might be required by law in LA County. Actually, on Wednesdays on KDAY (my favorite station) they have “West Coast Wednesday” and they only play West Coast rap. Should I get a tattoo of this? I am planning on dying here, sooner or later.

Bully – Trying

I saw this band open for Best Coast and they were so sick. They’ve got a great early Weezer sound that makes my little heart so happy. Plus they have a rad girl singer.

Billy Joel – The Longest Time

I had a crush this summer for a hot minute and I was feeling so lovey-dovey, all I could listen to was this song. Well, that didn’t last very long and I am back to my cold, crushless existence. However, this song is still amazing and Billy Joel’s voice is hella sexy. Did you know he does all the harmonies in this?  Sidenote: WOW THIS VIDEO IS RIDICULOUS. It’s cute that Billy Joel thought he’d have a full head of hair when he got old.

Ice Cube – No Vaseline

I’ve become a person who listens to gangster rap in the shower. How did this happen? Who have I become? I’m not sure, but I’m not sad about it.

Diane Coffee – Green

Diane Coffee is actually the name of band, with the other guy from Foxygen as the frontman. Isn’t this the nicest ballad you’ve ever heard? I just want to slow dance at a 1950’s prom to this.

Major Lazer, MØ & DJ Snake – Lean On

What’s up with all the songs these days where the chorus is just like “-eh- -eh- -ah- -oh-“? Like, that Justin Bieber and Diplo one is like that too. I’m not going to read too much into it. I definitely dig both songs but like, why? Where did this come from? Why don’t we have lyrics to our chorus anymore? And how much of an asshole am I when I try to sing this in my car?

Huey Lewis & The News – If This Is It

Damn, you could really do some great mom dancing to this song, right? Huey Lewis always reminds me of my parents, and since you know I’m hella homesick at this point, I’ve been listening to 80’s music and watching Cheers. So what? Another perfect 80’s beach babe aesthetic video, this one better than the last!

Irene Cara – Flashdance (What a Feeling)

One last 80’s song! Have you guys even seen Flashdance?! It’s pretty much the best movie I’ve ever seen. My room mate and I watched it for the first time together…then we watched it again one day later. And frankly, I’d like to watch it again right now. This song just gets me so PUMPED! I might do a whole post about Flashdance, actually. Would you be into that?

What have you guys been listening to? Let me know in the comments!

I love the wide range of music you're listening to at the moment, particularly the 80s features – I find I go in waves of listening to music from back then … though at the moment I've started to obsessively play Christmas music haha!
