THINGS TO DO IN LA: HOW TO HIKE BEHIND THE HOLLYWOOD SIGN

Obviously you people know I’m ALL about hiking these days. Nothing starts a weekend out better than waking up early, working up an appetite on the trails, and packing it in at brunch.

Ugh, I’m turning into SUCH an LA person. Anyways…

Last week I went to hike behind the Hollywood sign with my cousins Jason and Derek. Were you aware that you can get right up behind these glorious 45-foot tall aluminum letters? This is an essential hike if you live in this city because a) the view is incredible and b) it is so surreal standing behind a world-famous landmark.

I wonder what the rent for this tree house is?

Interesting choice of wall decor…

Where to Park to See the Hollywood Sign

Start by driving to the intersection of Franklin Ave. and N Beachwood Drive in Hollywood. Drive north on Beachwood drive. As you get closer to the Hollyridge trail head, the parking is permit only on weekends and holidays. Park on the street before the permit parking only signs, and continue north on foot. The walk through the neighborhood is beautiful. All of the houses look like they’re from fairytales!

The Hollyridge Trail

At the top of Beachwood Drive, there’s a gate. It’s unlocked, just walk right through. It kind of feels like you’re not supposed to be there, but don’t worry – hikers are totally allowed. Continue up the dirt road and you will see an area with picnic tables on your right. The trail starts right behind that.

The first part of the Hollyridge Trail is all dirt and there’s lots of horse poo from the horse tours that go by. Don’t step in the poo-poo, girls! When the trail forks, go to the left and up the hill. When you reach the paved portion of the trail, take a right.

As you ascend, there are STUNNING views of downtown Los Angeles and Burbank. You can even see the Disney animation studios if you look carefully!

It’s literally so weird being up close and personal with this American icon. Although it’s fenced off, you can get pretty close to the sign. There are cameras and people everywhere, so if you want to get closer I would suggest going very early on a weekday and wearing a ski mask to jump the fence. I’m not sure where you get ski masks in Los Angeles. The criminal supply store?

The Hollywood Sign Hike Distance

The trail is about 3.3 miles, which took us around 2 hours. It’s really the perfect length hike for the classic hike & brunch combo that I love so much. There’s very little cover from the sun, so make sure you wear sunscreen and bring plenty of water. Also, there are no restrooms.

  10. Cool! Thanks for the tip! I just went to LA for the first time this Summer and my hubby kept forgetting that I'd never been and was so surprised that I'd never seen the Hollywood sign. I did absolutely no touristy things both times I went, so I love this alternate idea!

  16. Blame my general ignorance, but I had no idea there was a hiking trail behind the Hollywood sign! I mean, I'm pretty aware that the sign is in the middle of somewhere, but I just never thought of a hiking trail. Haha, anyway, what a great post! I can't wait to finally go to LA to do this!

  19. I've never been to LA so it's a no go for me as to having been to the Hollywood sign. I'm not a hiking person, but if I'm ever out in LA I feel like it's just something you should probably do, right? I mean it's probably like going to Vegas and not visiting the Vegas sign, right lol?

Two hours is a HIKE, girl. You're a champ lol.

Since I love hiking, I will consider hiking there whenever I have chance to visit there (maybe carry ski mask with me just in case haha) My favourite place to hike was Snowdonia, spectacular view! x
