THINGS TO DO IN LA: HIKING ESCONDIDO FALLS IN MALIBU

“Hiking”,“nature”, and “waterfalls” are probably not words that you associate with Los Angeles, right? But surprise! LA County is full of amazing nature trails, and a few even have waterfalls. My friends and I were a bit skeptical, so we went to check out Escondido Falls in Malibu a few weeks ago.

About Escondido Falls

Escondido Falls is the largest waterfall in the Santa Monica Mountains. The trailhead is located in Malibu, just north of Pepperdine on the Pacific Coast Highway. The Escondido Falls trail is about 4 miles and takes 2 hours to hike.

Our Experience Hiking Escondido Falls

When I went in August, we hiked to the lower falls only. The hike was relatively easy and leisurely, starting with a paved road through a fancy residential neighborhood and descending into a wooded canyon. There were huge, twisting oak trees in the canyon, which reminded me a little bit of Ohio. Obviously, it was necessary to get our tree climbing on. There were also some weird mysterious metal pipes.

At the base of the lower falls, a bunch of people were hanging out and snapping selfies. Unfortunately, since we visited in late summer, the falls were mostly dried up. I say “mostly” because the flow was temporarily restored when Tommy climbed up to the top and relieved himself. Anyways…after chilling in the shade for a few minutes, we turned around and hiked back the way we came.

Apparently, there’s an entire upper fall area that we missed, which is supposed to be 10x as beautiful as the lower falls! WE DONE GOOFED. I definitely want to return to this trail during the rainy season and check out the upper portion of the falls…and hopefully there will actually be some real water flow next time!

  4. *LOL* love how Tommy restored the waterfall! I wish I had a favorite hiking spot, but to be honest, I'm not really a nature-kind-of-person. Does Lower East Side Manhattan count?
