Psssst! This is part two of my road trip series. For part one, click here!

When we woke up in Tulsa on Thursday morning, it was STILL RAINING. We packed our things quickly because we couldn’t wait to get to Texas and see some sunshine.

Blue skies as far as the eye can see…and not much else.

We had a short drive to Amarillo, Texas. I knew Amarillo was an important part of the Route 66 journey and it was supposed to have a lot of cool, quirky art. However, my mom and I didn’t really like Amarillo. It kind of reminds me of my hometown of Youngstown, Ohio. It was like a once-prosperous boomtown that now feels deflated and sad.
However, the burger pictured about was delicious. If there’s one thing that can be said about this country, it’s that it’s so easy to find great burgers. In fact, I pretty much had a cheeseburger for every meal because it’s basically impossible to mess up!

We also visited that Cadillac Ranch just to the west of Amarillo. Once again, it wasn’t really what we expected. There was trash everywhere and some little kid threw a spray can at me πŸ™

Forgive me, I just wasn’t as into the photo as the girl to the left was.

I love whoever put this Simba thing on the ground. Lion King 4 eva.

On Friday, my mom and I left Amarillo at 7am Central time with plans to reach Scottsdale, Arizona by dinner. It was a LONG DAY. We drove through two timezones and a variety of climates. It’s all kind of a blur now!

There’s not a whole lot out there, but all the rest stops have incredible views!

My mom and I stopped in Albuquerque for lunch and I really just feel like I done goofed, because Albuquerque would have been a great place to spend the afternoon instead of Amarillo. We really should have planned to spend the night there instead!

We went to The Range CafΓ© and I got the New Mexico Bennie, which included housemade green chili turkey sausage. WOWZA!

My mom got the ricotta pancakes with lemon curd and we agreed that they were the best pancakes we’d ever had in our entire lives. I might drive back to Albuquerque just for those!

My mom and I are big Eagles fans, and one of our favorite Eagles songs is “Take It Easy” which includes the lyric, “I was standing on the corner in Winslow, Arizona…” So obviously when we saw signs for Winslow, we had to stop. It was really cool because they actually have a statue there to commemorate the song, and a Route 66/Eagles gift shop next door blasting the Eagles!

We ended up reaching Phoenix by dinnertime. I was so excited to get to my aunt and uncle’s house, I basically slammed on the brakes in their round-about and jumped out of the car. Stay tuned for my next post about Phoenix to LA!
