While I was on vacation, my mom and I took a day trip to Cumberland Island, Georgia and had one of the most magical days ever. Cumberland Island is a pristine island at the southern tip of Georgia. It used to be owned by the Carnegie family, and the ruins of their mansions are still on the island. Now the island is almost completely uninhabited by humans – but there are tons of wild horses. The island is only accessible by ferry.

We traveled to Cumberland Island through a day trip package from the Greyfield Inn. The Greyfield Inn is a bed and breakfast in one of the intact Carnegie mansions. The package included a tour of the inn, lunches made with ingredients from their organic garden, bikes, towels, and whatever else we required to explore the island. They even had a basket of sunscreen and bug spray on the front porch.

My mom and I borrowed bikes and road south to explore the ruins of Dungeness. The ruins were incredible, and there were wild horses moseying around the grounds. After exploring for a few hours, we headed back to the Greyfield Inn and ate lunch. The inn’s dog, Sophie, came out for a pat and while we were eating, some horses joined us in the lawn for their grass lunch. After we ate, we grabbed towels and pedaled down to the beach. The hike over the dunes was hot and sandy but we were rewarded with empty beaches as far as the eye could see. We explored the tide pools and found some amazing shells, most of which were still filled with living creatures so we put them back (I’m not a monster!). We made it back to the ferry by 3:30 and could barely move, we were so exhausted and smelly. But it was so worth it! When we got back to our house, I jumped into the pool fully-clothed.
