6 BANDS TO LISTEN TO WHEN YOU’RE DONE WITH YOUR BEATLES PHASE

posted in: BLOG, MUSIC | 2
The Beatles released 217 songs during the 1960’s and they’re all awesome. That comes out to around 10 hours of music, so if you’re having your “Beatles phase,” you have plenty of material to keep yourself occupied. But at some point, you run out. And then you’re like “I’ve already listened to all the music by the best band ever. What is left for me to experience in the world?!”
Well, don’t jump yet. There’s tons of great music out there and guess what? People are making more every day. It never ends and it’s a wonderful thing. But if you’re craving the Beatle-y sound, here’s a few bands that might satisfy your urges.

1. TAME IMPALA

Tame Impala is this really cool psychedelic band from Australia. Listening to their music is like being wrapped up in a warm gooey cinnamon roll. Plus, their lead singer sounds just like John Lennon.

Listen:

2. THE OLIVIA TREMOR CONTROL

The Olivia Tremor Control was active in the 90’s and part of the Elephant 6 collective with more well-known Neutral Milk Hotel. Though their music sometimes verges on the too psychedelically unlistenable (Dusk at Cubist Castle features 10 songs in a row called “Green Typewriters”), they made a lot of great music in their short career. Lead singer Bill Doss died in 2012 under mysterious circumstances so, like The Beatles, once you’re done you’re done.
Listen:

3. ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA

ELO was a 70’s soft rock band whose intention was to “pick up where The Beatles left off.” Well, I’m not sure if they accomplished that, but they certainly have a Beatles flavor. A lot of their stuff sounds hella dated now and will inevitably remind you of your mom, but they are worth checking out if you like some 70’s cheese.
Listen:

4. ELLIOTT SMITH

Elliott Smith was an amazing 90’s/early 2000’s singer-songwriter. He was one of those tortured geniuses and guess what else? He too died under mysterious circumstances. He has tons of amazing songs and I highly, highly recommend him if you’re not already familiar with his work.
Listen:

5. COCONUT RECORDS

Coconut Records is actor Jason Schwartzman’s music solo project. I was really pleasantly surprised because I always associate actor music with, well, shit. This is nice and very Beatle-y sounding. Not genius, but not bad either.
Listen:

6. THE ZOMBIES

The Zombies are this super-legit 60’s band that were pretty under-appreciated in their time and have since gained a lot of recognition for their work. They’re just one of those bands where when you find out someone you know is a fan, you’re like, “Yes, this person RULES.”
Listen:
I mean, I know none of them are The Beatles. My sincere condolences. Believe me though, there is life after Beatles phase!
